As an activities developer and scientific consultant for the AURORA project, I have developed 56 activities which have been published on the AURORA Internet site (http://www.geogweb.org/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Aurora). These activities are individually peer reviewed, then accepted, or Not Awarded by trained editors. Aurora is a five-year, statewide educational project whose mission is to create an interactive collaborative learning community among teachers and students, homes and towns, and public and private organizations across the state of Oklahoma. Aurora uses a geography-based curriculum composed of real problems and relevant experiences to integrate several educational disciplines. These activities have been published from 1998 - 2003.

RESEARCH
EXPERIENCE
Geology
1996 - 1997 X-ray diffraction of clays and shales from Pennsylvanian and Jurassic Period exposures in central and western Iowa. From these X-ray scans, ratios of kaolinite to illite were calculated for use in extrapolation and interpolation of clay mixtures. These data were used as a baseline study for the region investigated.
1996 - 1997 X-ray diffraction of clays and shales searching in central Iowa for bentonite deposits of a concentration sufficient for time dating of the samples. These samples were intended for use in indicating the fallout time of volcanic ash from a western United States eruption. Negative results were obtained.
Science Education
The principal interest in Science Education has been investigating ways to improve the teaching and learning process. Five specific programs have yielded results that have lead to national, regional, or local presentations, publications, and classroom reform.
Summer 01 – Present The differences between pseudo-sciences and science. How understanding of the latter effects the acceptance of the former. How acceptance of former effects science education and critical thinking.
1998 - Present With Dr. Faye Neathery, I have investigated the reform of Elementary Science Methods: SCI 4352 to positively influence studentsÕ attitudes toward science. This is a research program involving constructivist epistemological theory in pre-service science education. The purpose of the study is to investigate the development of pre-service teachersÕ attitudes toward teaching science with inquiry methods as the result of their participation in the two-hour elementary science methods class. The reform effort focuses on the revision of the teacher preparation course with emphasis on a systemic change in the method in which mathematics, science, and education methods courses are taught across Oklahoma.
1997 - 2001 With Dr. Richard Bryant, the
teaching of evolution (biological and cosmological) in schools and possible
implications.
Historically, there have been disagreements between science and religion on certain issues. We were interested in better preparing future science teachers to address these areas of possible contention. In order to do this, we contacted the headquarters of the twenty-three largest organized religious groups in the United States to obtain information. We were interested in knowing if these organizations have any official position statement regarding the relationship between religion and science in general. We were also interested in knowing if they have an official position regarding two topics in particular: (1) biological evolution and (2) the origin of the universe.
1996 – Present There are many versions of constructivism. While the various guises of constructivism have much in common, they also have many differences. During the last thirty plus years, certain aspects of constructivism have been adopted in the teaching of science. While generally this has been hailed as an improvement over a didactic teaching style and a positive change for science education, there have been voices of dissent. One common argument against a constructivist approach is that it contains elements of instrumentalist, operationalist, and idealist epistemologies that distort the true nature of science including the goals of science and how scientists actually operate. It has been argued that, while some constructivist components are useful in science education, pedagogy based more on a realist epistemology would better serve the nature of science element of a science curriculum. Interviews and Piagetian type tasks with high school and university students are being conducted to investigate these claims.
1996 – Present How the explanation of causality develops in the young child (grades kindergarten through third grade; upper high school through university age students). Do cause and effect explanations have an invariant developmental order? This research is intended to study the existence of causal mental structures, their order of development, and possible tasks for their detection. Causality involves explanations as to why an event occurred. The data for this study will be collected through individual clinical interviews involving several Piagetian based causality tasks.

SCI 3314:
Geological Science for Elementary Teachers
SCI 3314 is the newest addition to the teacher preparation program. I designed the course during the Fall of 1997 and Spring of 1998. It is intended as a general Earth Science course covering major concepts of geology, environmental issues, and the relationship between science and society. This course is intended for prospective elementary and middle school teachers. I have taught SCI 3314 every semester starting in the Spring of 1999 and continuing to the present. The majority of SCI 3314 students are elementary education or special education majors. As with other courses, I employ classroom demonstrations with hands-on manipulative, multimedia presentations, small group interactions, open discussions, student lead lessons, current events and student experiences, as well as traditional lectures as instructional pedagogy.
SCI 3314L: Geological Science for Elementary Teachers Laboratory
SCI 3314L is the required laboratory component of SCI 3314. It provides students with hands-on, inquiry-oriented opportunities to learn and practice skills associated with scientific investigations while enhancing an understanding of the material presented during lecture. This course meets once a week for three hours. The activities for SCI 3314L are modifications of popular activities the students are likely to encounter during their professional teaching career. Each laboratory activity has been rewritten for an adult clientele, but it is stressed that with alterations they can be used in a kindergarten through junior high school setting. The activities are to be as useful as possible for the students.
SCI 4011I: Weather and Climatology (Interim
Science Seminar)
This installment of SCI 4011I is an
interim one week, four hour per day, special topic seminar. It includes discussions of weather,
climate, severe weather, precipitation, weather prediction and safety. I have taught this course each summer
session since 1998. The clientele
of this (and the SCI 4011I Earthquakes and Volcanoes) course range from seniors
who need another hour or two of upper level science in order to graduate, to
education majors specializing in science, public school teachers seeking
certification requirements, and the general public with a genuine interest in
the topic. This course requires
intensive multimedia (computer animation, video, Internet URLÕs such as the
Oklahoma Mesonet), lecture, discussion, and demonstrations.
SCI 4011I: Earthquakes and Volcanoes (Interim
Science Seminar)
This installment of SCI 4011I includes
discussions of general planetary statistics, plate tectonics, seismic
processes, causes and effects, volcanic processes, causes and effects, and
safety.
SCI
4011I: Natural Disasters (Interim
Science Seminar)
This course is designed to investigate various natural disasters, geologic in nature. Included are ones weather related such as: thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, hail – tectonic related: earthquakes, volcanoes – large scale: El Nino, La Nina, and small scale – land slides, avalanches, etc. See above for description of clientele.
SCI 4011I: Rocks and Minerals (Interim Science
Seminar)
As the name suggests, this SCI 4011I is an introduction to rocks and minerals. Students identify sample types, investigate origins of major groups, and investigate chemical properties.
SCI 4011I: DonÕt Learn Science from the Media
(Interim Science Seminar)
This is a critical look at the popular media (movies, television, music) and their depiction of the scientific process and scientific content. Clips from popular movies, television shows, etc. will be viewed then their depiction of science investigated. Topics will include: Astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, the meaning, nature and processes of science.
SCI 4012I:
Introduction to the Solar System (Interim Science Seminar)
This seminar course describes the formation and evolution of the Solar System. An introduction to the planets, their formation, and development.
