Dr. Dennis Widen is an Associate Professor in the Music Department at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Dr. Widen has a Bachelor of Music Education (BME), a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance (BM) and a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. Widen also holds a Ph.D. in Music Education/Piano Pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma. The title of Dr. Widen’s dissertation is Field-Dependent/Field-Independent Learner Response to Technologies Used in College Level Group Piano Classes. In his study, Dr. Widen studied the kinds of educational technologies students with a specific learning style chose to support their learning in group piano classes.
At Southwestern, Dr. Widen teaches Applied Piano, Music Theory I & II, Group Piano classes and Composition. Dr. Widen also serves as Coordinator of Graduate Music Studies at Southwestern. As a member of the graduate faculty, he also teaches Foundations of Music Education, Introduction to Music Research and periodic seminars in teaching World Music.
Dr. Widen frequently serves as accompanist for both student and faculty recitals. Dr. Widen is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and the College Music Society. He is the co-advisor for the departmental student chapter of the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association.
Since coming to Southwestern, Dr. Widen has been instrumental in evaluating and revising the group piano curriculum and expanding the Master of Music in Music Education degree program to include an Emphasis in Piano Pedagogy.
Dr. Widen has been a frequent adjudicator for the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association (OMTA), the Norman Piano Teachers Association and the James Breckenridge Piano Competition held each spring on the campus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
