Ms. South has been teaching horn at SWOSU since 2005. She previously taught in the public school systems of Arapaho (K-12 music) and Weatherford Middle School. She holds two degrees, Bachelor of Music in Horn Performance and Master’s Degree in Music Education from SWOSU.
Ms. South currently serves as principal horn in the Enid Symphony and has played Principal Horn in the Hutchinson Symphony and the Newton Symphony in Kansas. Janis plays with Festival Brass in Dallas, Texas and also plays annually in the Stan Kenton Christmas Brass in Wichita, Kansas. Also an accomplished pianist and accompanist, she serves as an accompanist for numerous undergraduate and graduate recitals. Her first teacher was her father, Stephen Ambler, and she also studied with Nicholas Smith and Jay Schale. She has also performed and studied with many horn professionals in master classes and camps such as Hermann Baumann, Barry Tuckwell, Kendall Betts, Jeff Nelson, Jeff Agrell and Lin Foulk.
Janis South serves as the advisor for Mu Phi Epsilon, a national music fraternity and is a member of The International Horn Society and NafME. She also serves as coordinator for the All Senior Honor Band at SWOSU. The courses that she teaches are Introduction to Music, Introduction to World Music, Brass Methods, Brass Ensemble and Applied Horn.
