Mrs. Curtis has a Bachelors
of Music degree from Oklahoma City University and a
Master of Sacred Music degree from Southern Methodist University and Perkins School of
Theology. A dedicated musician and
teacher, she is a member of the Voice Care Network and has 40 years experience
as a choral director. Her diverse
experience includes her time as university instructor, high school choral
director, church musician with as many as seven
concurrent choirs, in addition to being a well-received recital and concert
soloist.
Since 2001 she has been at Southwestern Oklahoma State University where she
teaches applied voice and organ, women’s chorus, voice class, and class
piano. Previous university teaching was done at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Under her direction, the SWOSU Women’s
Chorus was chosen to perform at the Oklahoma Music
Educators Association convention in 2003 and again in its centennial year in 2007. Mrs. Curtis is a long-time member of Oklahoma
City’s Canterbury Choral
Society with which she has performed as a featured soloist. In the spring of 2008
she was asked to conduct Canterbury and the
OKC Philharmonic for a selection during Canterbury’s spring
concert.
In addition to her regular teaching, Mrs. Curtis
performs yearly in recital: the most recent being on February 27 and March 2, 2008 at SWOSU
and McFarlin United Methodist Church in Norman,
respectively. The joint recital was performed with her colleague Dr. Robert Jones, Assistant
Professor of Voice and Opera from North
Dakota State University. Together they performed the comic opera “La
Serva Padrona” – a short, three-character opera for soprano, bass, and a
mute. Mrs. Curtis also performed the
Samuel Barber “Knoxville: Summer of
1915” and Dr. Jones performed the Ralph Vaughan Williams “Songs of Travel”.
Mrs. Curtis has both men and women in her studio, and
teaches vocal music education, music therapy, and performance majors. An excellent pianist and organist, she also
accompanies her own students in student and senior recitals. She is married to
the Rev. Torrey Curtis, retired United Methodist minister. The Curtises have
two adult children, Christopher and Laurin.
