Nursing Scholarships and Awards

Scholarships

Unless otherwise indicated, the following scholarships are awarded through Nursing after admission to the nursing program. Contact the SWOSU Nursing Program staff with questions.
  • Charlene Dopson Scholarship

    Scholarships awarded to junior nursing student meeting the following criteria: Established financial need and achievement of a 2.5 GPA.

  • Grants/Loans with Work Pay Back

    Health Care Workforce Training Commission

    Application may be made to several area hospitals which will grant up to $7,000 per year/3 years matching or $3,500 per year/3 years non-matching. These grants/loans are repaid through work obligation, with full benefits, following graduation.

  • National Student Nurses Association Scholarships

    Applicants must be NSNA members. The sponsors may set other eligibility requirements. Applications are available from the National Student Nurses Association, 10 Columbus Circle, New York, NY, 10019.

  • Nursing School Alumni of the Clinton Hospital Scholarship

    This scholarship was established by the alumni of the Clinton Hospital nursing school. The student must be a U.S. citizen and live in Oklahoma. Students must be full-time, regularly enrolled in good standing, perform satisfactory work toward their degree, must be a junior nursing major.

  • Evelyn Huebert Shephard Nursing Scholarship

    This scholarship is available to a junior nursing student regularly enrolled at SWOSU, must be a U.S. citizen with a home residence in Oklahoma.

  • Indian Health Services

    This scholarship program provides financial support for a two-year commitment in an Indian health program.

  • SWOSU Foundation Scholarships

    Applications are available in the Institutional Advancement Foundation and Alumni Office located in Administration 201.

  • U.S. Armed Forces   

    All three branches of the armed forces offer scholarships for students who pre-list.

  • U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

    Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program for Registered Nurses

    Registered nurses interested should contact the Student Affairs Committee for more information.

  • Veterans Administration Scholarships

    Selected Ready Reserves interested in careers in nursing are eligible for $400 per month for full-time study. Repaid by two-year work commitment in a VA medical center.

  • Winona Madison Nursing Scholarship 

    The scholarship program was established by Dr. and Mrs. Robert O. Raulston in recognition of the distinguished 41-year nursing career of Winona Madison. Their perpetual fund will provide scholarship assistance for a junior nursing student planning to work in western Oklahoma.

  • Navy Nurse Corps

    In this program students receive a $10,000 bonus plus a $1,000 stipend per month while you finish school. Once you complete your nursing degree you will be commissioned as a Nurse Corps Officer in the U.S. Navy and serve on active duty for 4-5 years.

  • The Sue Holloway Scholarship

    A $2000 award is awarded to selected nursing students who are committed to end-of-life care.

  • Hospital Scholarships

    Multiple hospitals across the state offer scholarships and tuition assistance for a commitment to work in their facility. Contact the Nursing Department for more information.

 

Awards

Golden Stethoscope Award

In Nursing School, it is easy to be distracted by the task at hand and forget about the small things that show that you care for others. One individual was recognized by both peers and faculty as demonstrating caring by taking time to help others and consistently demonstrate the “Spirit of Nursing."

This is an award for a senior student is good standing with a GPA of 3.0 or better in clinical courses. Student may be nominated by self, faculty or peer and must provide a peer or faculty witness to provide anecdotes relating caring behaviors exhibited by the candidate. Caring examples must be provided by the voters for the award. Nominees will be voted on by faculty and seniors by secret ballot and confirmed by Student Affairs faculty. 

Outstanding Junior Nursing Student Award

The students and faculty of the Department of Nursing, in acknowledgement of student excellence annually present this award to the junior nursing student who is recognized for:

  • Completing the first and second semester of the nursing program with above average grades and excellence in clinical performance
  • Having the respect of their peers
  • Exhibiting a caring, concerned attitude in dealing with clients
  • Demonstrating leadership qualities among peers and in the community

An annual award given to a nursing student who has completed two semesters with a GPA of 3.0 or better in both theory and clinical performance; is an active member in one of SWOSU’s nursing associations; and participates in community service.

Outstanding Senior Nursing Student Award

The students and faculty of the Department of Nursing, in acknowledgement of student excellence, annually present this award to the senior nursing student who is recognized for:

  • Having completed the nursing program with above average grades and clinical performance
  • Is an active participant in one of SWOSU’s nursing associations 
  • Exhibits a caring, concerned attitude in working with clients
  • Participates in community service

An annual award is given to a nursing student who has completed four semesters with a GPA of 3.0 or better in both theory and clinical performance. 

Personal Evolution Award

(Junior & Senior)

The students and faculty of the Department of Nursing give this award to the junior and senior nursing student who is a member in one of SWOSU’s nursing associations and shows the most significant positive improvement both personally and professionally.

This is awarded to a junior and senior who may be peer or faculty nominated. These students must be a participant in one of SWOSU’s nursing associations and show a significant improvement in one of two areas: GPA and grades over a minimum of one year, and or social skills demonstrated by anecdotal reports of improved communication or assertiveness. Nominees must be voted on by secret ballot by faculty and the appropriate class.
