Phillip
Fitzsimmons
Phillip Fitzsimmons began work as the
Serials, Government Documents and Digitization Librarian for Al
Harris Library on Dec. 3, 2007.
Education
Phillip has a B.S. from the University of Oklahoma in Philosophy
and English Literature and is certified to teach language arts in
grades 6-12 in the state of Oklahoma. He has a Master's in Library
and Information Studies, also from OU.
Serials
Phillip is responsible for library service regarding magazines,
periodicals and newspapers (in both print and electronic formats) and
databases.
Government
Documents
His
responsibilities include care for and promotion of Government
Documents. The focus of promoting the use of Government documents is
to help people to realize the variety of free and useful information
available to us all from the government. Most of it is easily
accessible because it is on the Internet.
Digitization
Projects
The Al Harris Library has initiated an ongoing digitization
program that will scan and post on the Internet documents unique to
Southwestern Oklahoma State University. The first phase of this
initiative is to make all of the SWOSU yearbooks available
electronically and fully searchable. More projects will
follow.
Professional
Interests
For the past three years Phillip has been the Web master for the
Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) of the Oklahoma Library
Association (OLA). He is currently Chair of the Round Table for the
2007-08 year. The goal of SRRT is to promote programs that contribute
to literacy and library service to underserved groups. SRRT's slogan
is: "Making sure everyone gets a piece of the pie."
Oklahoma SRRT gives the annual Ruth Brown Award, which includes a
$500 grant, to an individual, group or library that provides a
service or program that best represents the spirit of the librarian
activist Ruth Brown. For more about the Ruth Brown Award click here.
Personal
Interests
Phillip spends many of his evenings building a stained glass
window to be raffled at the 2008 OLA conference. Proceeds from the
raffle will contribute to the cash award of the 2009 Ruth Brown
Award.
Below is the 17" x 21" window with the first stage complete. All
200 pieces have been cut and ground to fit. The next phase involves
foiling the edges so the pieces can be soldered together.
