Terry Segress is currently the Chair of the Department of Music at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, a position that he has held since 1998.

 

Dr. Segress served as the public school band and choral director in Erick, Oklahoma, for four years.  He was the band director in the Weatherford Public Schools for six years. 

 

In 1970-71 Dr. Segress directed the SWOSU Jazz Band as an adjunct instructor and was hired full-time at SWOSU in 1971.  At Southwestern he has been the director of the SWOSU Jazz Ensemble “A” until last year and is the founder of the SWOSU Jazz Festival which is in its 38th year.  Segress is also the coordinator of the SWOSU summer music camp program and is the director of the SWOSU Jazz Camp, Middle School Band Camp and Band Camp.   He also teaches applied tuba, counterpoint and instrumentation classes.

 

Dr. Segress received his Bachelor of Music from Oklahoma City University and his Master of Music and Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of North Texas.  He was inducted into the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Oklahoma Music Educators Hall of Fame in 1999.  He was presented the SWOSU Bernhardt Award for Faculty Excellence in 1997, and was honor as the Jazz Educator of the Year in 2005 by the Oklahoma State Unit of the International Association for Jazz Education.  In 2006 he was awarded an Arts and Education Award at the Governor’s Arts Awards ceremony at the Oklahoma State Capitol.

 

His wife, Teresa, holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Northeastern Oklahoma State University and recently completed her Master of Music in Clarinet Performance at SWOSU.   She has taught in Clinton, Oklahoma, for the past 21 years and has served as Director of the Clinton HS Band the past five years.

 

Dr. Segress has a daughter and son-in-law, Bill & Sheri Shulenberger, McKinney, TX, a son, Stan, Granby, CO, a stepson, Myles Madden, Clinton, and a granddaughter, Tori Whitfield, McKinney, TX.  His sister, Jill Segress Hunt, is a professional organist in Lake Forest, Illinois.  His hobbies include walking and woodworking.
